1. It's a Zinsco or a Federal Pacific panel

Two brands are notorious for a reason. Zinsco (also sold as GTE-Sylvania) and Federal Pacific (the "Stab-Lok" breakers) were installed in millions of homes from the 1950s to the 1980s. The problem is the same in both: a breaker that can fail to trip during an overload or short circuit. A breaker that doesn't trip is the one job it exists to do, undone — and that's how an overload becomes heat, and heat becomes a fire.

You can often spot them by name on the panel door or the breaker faces. If you have one, it isn't an emergency by itself — but it is the single strongest reason to get the panel assessed, and most electricians recommend replacing them.

2. Breakers trip often — or won't reset

A breaker that trips now and then is doing its job. A breaker that trips often, or that won't reset, is telling you a circuit is overloaded or something is wrong downstream. Repeatedly resetting it doesn't fix anything — it just removes the warning.

3. The panel is warm, discolored, or smells

A healthy panel is cool and quiet. If the panel cover or any breaker feels warm to the touch, looks scorched or discolored, or gives off a faint burning or plastic smell, stop and treat it seriously — those are signs of heat building up inside a connection. The same goes for a buzzing or crackling sound.

4. Lights flicker or dim across the house

One flickering light is usually a bulb or a fixture. Lights that dim or flicker throughout the house — especially when the AC, the microwave, or a big appliance kicks on — point to a loose connection or a service that's stretched too thin.

5. Two-prong outlets and no ground

Older homes often have ungrounded, two-prong outlets. Grounding is what gives a fault somewhere safe to go instead of through you or your electronics. A home with no grounding, or with cheater plugs forcing three-prong devices into two-prong outlets, is missing a basic layer of protection the code has required for decades.

6. Aluminum branch wiring

For a stretch of the 1960s and '70s, homes were wired with aluminum instead of copper for the branch circuits. Aluminum expands, contracts, and oxidizes differently than copper, so connections can loosen and overheat over time. It doesn't always need a full rewire, but it does need to be handled correctly at every connection.

7. A 100-amp service running a modern home

A 100-amp service was plenty for a house in 1985. Add an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range, or solar and a battery, and that same service is suddenly asked to do far more than it was sized for. This one isn't about age — it's about capacity, and the only honest way to answer it is a real NEC Article 220 load calculation, not a guess off the panel label.

8. Rust, moisture, or a panel that was never permitted
