Do You Need a Panel Upgrade to Install an EV Charger?

Not always. Here's how to tell if your electrical panel can handle a Level 2 EV charger in California — the load calc, the 240V circuit, and when an upgrade is worth it.
It's the first question almost every EV owner asks, and the honest answer is: not always. Plenty of California homes add a Level 2 charger without touching the panel — but some do need an upgrade, and guessing wrong is expensive. Here's how to tell.
What a Level 2 charger actually needs
A Level 2 charger runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit — typically sized at 60 amps for a 48-amp continuous charger (NEC 625's 125% rule). Two things have to be true for your existing panel to handle it:
- Enough capacity — your service has room for the new load on top of everything else in the house.
- A free breaker slot — even a 200-amp panel that's completely full may need work just to make room.
When you probably DON'T need an upgrade
If you have a modern 200-amp service with open slots, there's a good chance we can add the charger on a dedicated circuit and you're done. Even some 100-amp panels can handle a charger — sometimes with smart load management that keeps the charger from running at the same time as another big load.
When you probably DO need one
- An older 100-amp service that's already near its limit with AC, oven, dryer and water heater.
- A fully populated panel with no room for another breaker.
- An obsolete or unsafe panel (Zinsco / Federal Pacific) that should be replaced anyway.
- You're also planning solar, a battery, or a heat pump — worth sizing for all of it at once.
Does it need a permit?
