What a Tesla Powerwall 3 really costs installed in California in 2026 — what's included, how many you need, and the honest truth about incentives now that the federal solar credit has ended.

Battery backup is one of the most-requested upgrades in California — and one of the most confusing to price, because the number depends on how many units you need and what your panel requires to interconnect safely. Here's the honest picture for 2026.

Installed cost in our area

  • $13,000–$18,000 — one Tesla Powerwall 3, installed turnkey with the Backup Gateway.
  • $8,500–$11,000 — each additional Powerwall.
  • +$3,500–$8,000 — a solar-ready / interconnection panel upgrade if your busbar can't meet NEC 705.12.

Full detail is in the Powerwall cost guide. Not sure how many you need? The backup sizing calculator shows how many Powerwalls your must-run loads take.

The honest incentive picture

This matters, because a lot of sites still get it wrong: the federal residential solar tax credit (25D) ended after 2025. Anyone still advertising "30% back" on a home battery is quoting an expired program. What's still real in California is the SGIP battery rebate — with higher amounts for medically vulnerable or high fire-risk households — plus the value of storing your own solar to use at night under NEM 3.0. We only show you what's actually current.

Under NEM 3.0, California utilities pay far less for the solar you export than they charge for the power you import — which is exactly why a battery (storing your daytime solar for the evening) is now the smart move, with or without adding new panels.

Do I need solar too?

No. A Powerwall backs up your essential circuits with or without solar. With solar, it also stores your daytime production for the evening. Either way, the interconnection has to meet NEC 705.12 (the 120% busbar rule) — which is why we check your panel first and, if needed, fold a panel upgrade into the same job so it's done once, correctly.

Astral is a Tesla Certified Installer. We size the battery around your real must-run circuits, do the interconnection to code, and flag the SGIP and current incentives you may qualify for — never promising eligibility.
