What does a hot tub need electrically?▾
Most hot tubs need a dedicated 240V GFCI-protected circuit, a disconnect within sight but at least 5 ft from the water (NEC 680.12), and equipotential bonding so everything around the water sits at the same potential. We size it, install it, and permit it.
Why is bonding such a big deal?▾
Because water plus electricity is where shocks turn deadly. Equipotential bonding ties the pump, rails and reinforcing together so there's no voltage difference to shock you. NEC 680 requires it — and it's exactly the code step a licensed C-10 doesn't skip.
Can't I just plug it in?▾
Some 120V plug-in spas exist, but most need a hardwired 240V GFCI circuit. Either way, the bonding and disconnect rules still apply. We'll tell you exactly what yours needs from the nameplate.
